I think the new options are great.
The only thing missing from being a total replacement of the signal marker is that we can't "box" text like we can do in the signal marker - ie place a box around the text.
We also cannot yet change the font - eg to tahoma.
Otherwise, I've already got a few ideas on how I can clean up my charts with this innovation.
I think those are great ideas. For Paint Indicator 2.6 you will have both options for both Box Labels and Font Style as seen below. Note that if Paint Labels is checked, the background boxex will be shaded appropriately as they are in screenshot below. If you uncheck Paint Label, the box will just be drawn in chart's background color with slim border.
Paint Indicator 2.6 is now available with the Box and Font Style options for Labels.
One more thought
It would be great to have signal actions added if these are to be a true replacement to signal marker
eg so we can have custom sounds indicating when a thresshold is reached
