Charting Essentials

This video on Charting Essentials provides some valuable information and shortcuts that all Investor/RT users should be aware of.

This video on Indicator Essentials is also very valuable when getting started with Investor/RT.

One concept that was not covered in that video because it was not available, but is very important, is the concept of Chart Trading Hours (Day Session and Full Session).  The Trading Hours window can be accessed by right-clicking in chart and choosing "Setup > Trading Hours" or simply click on the chart and hit the comma key on keyboard.  Proper setup of day and full session for each symbol is now very easy, but also increasingly important as more and more Investor/RT components rely on proper setup.  This video on Chart Hours Overview explains this concept in more detail

Chart Shortcuts
Key Action
Comma Change Charting Hours (Day and Full Session Hours of Charted Symbol)
Period Change View Period (Data Loaded Into Chart. eg. Last 10 Days, Jan 1, 2015 to Present)
Type Symbol Change Symbol.  Simply click on chart and type in any ticker symbol to change the chart to that symbol.
Insert Key Add Indicator
Any Number Change Periodicity
Mouse Scroll Wheel Horizontal Zoom.  Adjusts the pixels per bar and in the process accomplishes a horizontal zoom in (mouse wheel up) or zoom out (mouse wheel down).  A horizontal zoom can also be accomplished by dragging the time scale at bottom to the left (zoom in) or right (zoom out).
Up/Down Arrow Keys
Shift+Mouse Wheel Vertical Zoom.  Zoom in vertically with Shift+Mouse Wheel Up and zoom out vertically with shift+mouse wheel down.  A vertical zoom can also be accomplished by dragging the left half of the price scale up or down.
Shift+Up/Down Arrow Keys
Ctrl+Mouse Wheel Vertical Scroll.  Scroll up with Ctrl+Mouse Wheel Up and scroll down with Ctrl+Mouse Wheel Down.  First click within the pane you wish to scroll if the chart has multiple panes.  A vertical scroll can also be accomplished by dragging the right half of the price scale up or down.
Ctrl+Up/Down Arrow Keys
Left/Right Arrow Keys Scroll chart left/right by one bar.  Hold down the shift-key while operating the left/right arrow keys to scroll left/right one page.
Right-Click Popup Menu.  Right-click anywhere in the chart to access the chart popup menu which in turn provides access to any action or option available to the chart.
Double-Click: Time Scale Chart Preferences. Double-click in the time scale along the bottom of the chart to quickly access the chart preferences. Ctrl+Enter is another shortcut to the chart preferences window.
Double-Click: Price Scale Scale Preferences.  Double-click in the scale to access the preferences of the scale for each
Double-Click: White Space Element Manager.  Double-click anywhere on the background of any chart pane to access the charts Element Manager.  The Delete key on keyboard will also access the Element Manager, unless a specific indicator in chart is selected, in which case, that indicator will be deleted.
Double-Click: Indicator Indicator Preferences.  Double-click on an indicator to access the preference window for that indicator.
Double-Click: Bars Instrument Preferences.  Double-click on the bars/candles in a chart to access the instrument preferences which allow for changing of the instrument, the chart style and colors, and the periodicity.  The Enter key will also access this same window.
Double-Click: Pane Title Maximime/Restore Pane.  Only relevant for charts with more than one pane.  Turn on/off a panes title bar by right-clicking in pane and "Show: Pane Title".  Dbl-Click on the pane title to maximize that pane, and dbl-click on it again to restore it (and other panes) to original size.
Drag Right Margin Adjust the width of the right-margin.  Position cursor just to the rigth of the right-most bar and the cursor will change to two vertical lines.  Mouse down and drag left or right to increase or decrease the right-margin space.
Click Scale Button Change Scaling.  Click the scale button at the top right corner of price scale to change the scaling options. Double-click in the price scale to get more control.  After vertically zooming or scrolling a pane, the button will change to M for manual scaling. To get back to automatic, click the button and select A (auto) or O (instrument only).
Refresh Button Download/Refresh one day of tick data.  The circular arrow at the bottom right of the chart will request one day of tick data on the charted instrument.
Shift-Click Refresh Button Full recalculation of all indicators.  Shift-clicking the refresh button forces a full calculation on all indicators in the chart.
Ctrl-Click Refresh Button Reload bar data and full recalculatoin of chart.  Ctrl-clicking on the refresh button forces the bar data to be reloaded from the database and then a full recalculation of all indicators in the chart.
Multi-Link Color Button Change the multi-link color of the chart.  The button at the far lower right corner of chart (right of refresh button) is the multi-link button.  Use this button to change the multi-link button of the chart.  This color can be used for changing the symbol or periodicity of multiple charts at once, or having multiple charts share an indicator with "This Color" scope.
Minus Key Hide all indicators.  The - key will temporarily hide all indicators in the chart to give full focus on underlying bars.  Hit the - key again to bring the indicators back.
Shift-Plus Key Toggle Profile Indicator Info Box.  If the chart has one or more instances of the Profile Indicator, striking the + key with the Shift key depressed will toggle the Info Box on/off for all Profiles.
Shift Esc Close Chart.  Strike the Esc key with the Shift key depressed to quickly close a chart.  Repeat this process to quickly close multiple windows/charts.
